  4.     I was both surprised and disappointed to read your item about
  5. London's being the "city of filth" (WORLD, Jan. 30) and then a
  6. letter about dog dirt in Paris (LETTERS, Feb. 20). I live in
  7. Amsterdam, and this has to be the No. 1 European capital for dog
  8. excrement. In a small, overcrowded country with almost 15 million
  9. inhabitants, we have more than a million dogs. It is not unusual
  10. to see the tenant of a cramped city apartment taking two, three or
  11. even four dogs for their "walkies." The result is left on the
  12. sidewalks, in the parks and on the banks of the rivers and canals.
